Today’s Top Golf News in Three Minutes

Good Morning,

Oh, the glamorous life of pro golfers—jetting off to Hawaii for the season opener, crushing drives, sinking putts, and… slicing their hands open on glass while making Christmas dinner? Yep, that’s how Scottie Scheffler’s holidays went. The world’s number one golfer managed to take himself out of the PGA Tour opener at Kapalua with a freak kitchen injury. Apparently, even Masters champions aren’t immune to the dangers of meal prep. A quick surgery to remove some glass shards later, and Scheffler’s on the mend, aiming to be back by mid-January for The American Express. Meanwhile, we’re all left wondering if he should just stick to Uber Eats next year.

Not to be outdone in the “holiday injuries” category, Viktor Hovland decided to join the club by breaking his pinky toe. How? That’s a mystery he hasn’t exactly cleared up, but judging by his Instagram, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds. Unlike Scottie, Viktor’s still planning to show up at The Sentry, taped up and probably popping painkillers like Tic Tacs. Because why not? It’s just golf. You barely use your feet, right?

Speaking of The Sentry, the show must go on at Kapalua without Scheffler. It’s the PGA Tour’s fancy new “Signature Event,” which means bigger prizes, more points, and all the drama you can handle. Sixty of the best players in the world will tee it up, including Ludvig Åberg, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, and other household names. Okay, maybe not Ludvig yet, but give it time. The guy’s a stud. Kapalua’s lush Hawaiian setting is ready to deliver another beautiful reminder that the rest of us are stuck in winter while these guys are living the dream. Oh, and they’ve raised $9 million for local charities over the years, so at least we can feel good about our jealousy.

Of course, while everyone’s recovering from turkey comas and bad holiday gift exchanges, the golf world is still buzzing about how much things changed in 2024. The PGA Tour took a nice little spin on the “let’s partner with Saudi money” carousel, shaking up the entire sport. Suddenly, the elite players are flexing their financial muscles, skipping more events, and leaving fans wondering if they’re an afterthought. Sure, the money’s great—golfers can now afford the really nice private jets—but some critics aren’t so sure this is the way to grow the game. Not that anyone asked us.

In brighter news, there’s nothing like a good comeback story to warm your heart. Max Greyserman nearly quit golf after a wrist injury sidelined him in 2022, but now he’s living his best life on the PGA Tour after grinding his way back on the Korn Ferry circuit. And let’s not forget the underdogs who gave us some of the best moments of 2024, like Angel Hidalgo taking down Jon Rahm in Spain or Matteo Manassero ending an 11-year drought with a win. Golf might be a posh sport, but these stories remind us that it’s also full of unexpected heroes.

Looking ahead to 2025, there’s plenty to get hyped about—Jordan Spieth finding his mojo again, Charley Hull grabbing a major, or maybe even a LIV golfer sneaking into a PGA event. Who knows? This is golf, where anything can happen, including, apparently, players taking themselves out of competition with Christmas decorations and clumsy footwork. Here’s to another season of birdies, bogeys, and whatever else this wild game throws at us.

The Sentry - PGA Tour - Kapalua Resort - Kapalua, HI

The Sentry, the opening tournament of the 2025 PGA TOUR season, is set to take place from January 2-5, 2025, at the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Maui, Hawaii.
